For far too long, the politics of Northeast Pennsylvania have been in the hands of a select few, an old-boy network of individuals who care less about the people of this region and more about lining their own pockets and staying in power. Although much of that influence has begun to erode, if we aspire to true recovery and genuine prosperity, we need to go further. And yes, it's going to take hard work and strength of character to not only reach for short-term goals, but to push for real change…change for the better.
We need a fresh perspective from someone who actually lives here, works here and experiences life here in the region…just like you. It's time we required old-fashioned selflessness, honesty and honor from our leaders, people who are not afraid of change and not too intimidated to make the tough decisions. We are weary of the "inside circle" taking care of themselves…the pay raises, the tax breaks, the outright corruption…with nothing to offer us but empty promises, excuses and the same old story.
We've had enough. I've had enough. And I want to do something about it…with your support. It's time to take back our government and let our voices be heard again. Together, we will learn from our past, and work together to build a better tomorrow.
For generations, my family has lived in the area and taken an active role in the community as teachers, coaches, and civic leaders. My mother, the former Diane Diskin, was raised as one of eight children in Southside Scranton. She grew up in a working-class neighborhood on Pittston Avenue, where she attended St. Mary's of South Side High School. My father, Joe Haggerty, as Head Coach of the Bishop Klanowski Dons, brought South Scranton a PIAA state basketball championship in 1976.
As I grew up, competitive sports gave me the opportunity to meet lots of people from all around the region and form genuine friendships that endure to this day. Born and raised in Dunmore, I always knew that I would move back here someday. I have always had a love for the area, and for the hardworking, friendly people who live here. My wife and I are fortunate to be able to raise our son around so many family members and friends.
